Two Envelopes And A Phone
Two Envelopes And A Phone is starting
Right - I’ve decided to participate in the June on the Range reading project. That said, I own nothing that I could just reach for and read…and the closest bookstore didn’t have Shane, or True Grit, L’ Amour, or Zane Grey. So I just browsed, and I found this book. How much of a Western is this, actually? - well, I’m not sure, it may be more darkly funny Crime stuff. Nevertheless, call it “enough of a Western”.

I should finish it later tonight - I wanna know everything. If one could call this a Western novel, or a Crime novel…let’s just say if you changed any one little thing, it wouldn’t be either. Skirting the edges…and really, it’s not a ‘genre novel’. It’s hypnotic, eye-opening Contemporary Canadian Lit of the best kind. Grey and Ezzy will stick, for a long time. I do think Western fans should get here.

Everything just heated up like a bonfire gone berserk. It's great. Meanwhile...someone has lent me an old copy of True Grit, so I can stretch June on the Range reading further, and with a classic. But I realized I have other books that kind of fit: I've got The Wild Ohio by Bart Spicer; I've got Mexican Hat by Michael McGarrity; I've even got A Prayer for the Dying by Stewart O'Nan for emergencies.

I am loving this. I do consider it as wonderfully eligible for the June on the Range reading project. Yes, okay - we’re in modern times, in Alberta, not in the Southwestern USA of the 1880s. I do feel like I want to read one other, more recognizable, Western in June. But the blurb/quote calling this an “Indigenous Western” is spot on - we’re even getting the modern answer to a good ol’ “cattle drive”. Captivating!
