The book said a lady should examine the compartments of a man's heart before she gave herself in marriage, for that was a great step in the Labyrinth of Life. Virtue, Kindness and Companionship in a man were much lauded, which were mighty odd notions to me. I puzzled over ever having heard of such a man in all my life.

It's called The Penny Heart/A Taste For Nightshade, and I think it may well be my next read.
