Probably my last translation difference to share! ⬇️
Audio: “Alas,” said Monte Cristo, “it is the infirmity of our nature, always to believe ourselves much more unhappy than those who groan by our sides.”
Book: “Alas,” said Monte Cristo, “our poor species can pride itself on the fact that every man thinks himself unhappier than another unfortunate, weeping and moaning beside him.”

What gets lost in translation in beloved old classics? Here’s another difference:
Audio:
…while Madame de Villefort reprimanded her son with a gentleness and moderation very far from conveying the least idea of a fault having been committed.
Book:
As for Mme de Villefort, she rebuked her son with a moderation that would surely not have pleased Jean-Jacques Rousseau, if little Edouard had been called Emile.

Had to take a quick break to study up on my Napoleonic history. Dumas assumes readers know a little more than I knew up till 30 minutes ago. 😆 Back at it now, with improved comprehension! 🇫🇷
