Ch 8-17...so much is happening now. Nr 4 candidate for "le fauteuil hanté" comes forth. He's afraid but determined to become member AF. We still don't know how the 3 men were killed in Académie francaise. (AF). Book is so easy to read...I can even mange w/o the dictionary!

Ch 3-4 Not much intrigue in these chapters. What I notice is Leroux's style of writing. He metions character's names all the time instead of referring to them with pronouns. Mentions names 152 X in ch 3 and 162 x in ch 4. These are chapters with 10 pages! Not much real 'text' left over to move the narrative along.

Ch 1-2 - Leroux tells us: two scholars attempt to join the Académie française and both suddenly collapse and die during acceptance speech! Both were elected to: "le fauteuil hanté" (hauted chair). Love the cliffhangers at end of both chapters: a "shadow" glides among the public,...gloomily he returns home, Place Dauphine, île de Cité and knocks on the door with 'marteau'... metal door knocker. Who is the shadow?
