u know a character is an absolute scumbag when rodya clearly has the moral high ground

oh this chapter was just masterful, exceptional, beautiful... one of the MANY chapters that make me understand why dostoyevsky is considered a genius

jesus the chapter where mrs marmeladov dies was so depressing. obviously meant to parallel rodya's dream about the mare dying which was also really rough... poor sonya

poor sonya is already living thru the absolute shittest day ever then here comes rodya's WWND? (what would napolean do?) ass to make it even worse

those strange few chapters where rodya is one of the more normal people in the room

i think porfiry's real "surprise" for rodya is that the nikolay's confession & the tradesman's apology are all just a ruse to make rodya feel at ease and slip up even more. porfiry literally said that was his plan!! he also directly tells rodya when they first met "just wait a little, i'll play a joke on you, too!" he faked a whole marriage before in jest so i dont doubt his ability to act

update: columbo was, in fact, inspired by the detective in this!

every time porfiry finishes a sentence i imagine a ring announcer yelling K.O.! along w boxing bells
