CHARACTERAZTION: When Coriolanus is in the cage with the tributes, the author does a good job of showing the fear in Coriolanus. "His heart pounded in his chest, and he crouched slightly, fists extended, in anticipation of the imminent attack." (Pg 46) This quote shows the emotions Coriolanus was feeling when the tributes were about to attack him. He was scared but was also defensive.

VISUALIZE: When Coriolanus is at the train station with all the tributes, I can visualize how it feels to be there. "By now the smell of the car, musty and heavy with manure, had reached Coriolanus. They were transporting the tributes in livestock cars, and not very clean ones at that." (Pg 41) This quote helps the reader visualize what the cars look like and smell like and how it would feel to ride in those cars.

I have been making connections from the previous Hunger Games books to this book. For example, in Mockingjay, Tigris helped Katniss and her team in their journey to kill Snow. However in this book, we learn Tigris was Snow's cousin and before he became president they were very close and had a great relationship. It is very interesting to see how this book affects what happened in the other Hunger Games books.

It is 64 years before Katniss entered the Hunger Games, and the 10th Annual Hunger Games is coming up. Right now, the story is taking place at the Academy in the Capitol. "Now, though the streets were finally clear, rubble still lay in piles on the sidewalks, and whole buildings were as gutted as the day they'd been struck." (Pg 12) Even though it had been 10 years, the Capitol is still recovering from the war.
