A strange journey through my own past growing up in East Texas, but also a snapshot into the history of the Brazos river and surrounding countryside. It's haunting and strange because the older folks depicted in the book seem to step out of my memory of the distant past.

It's hard to explain.

I'm decades removed from John Graves, but the peoples he describes in his encounters along the Brazos river could have stepped out of my fragmented childhood memories. They were my father's side of the family; a grim and sometimes passionless group of people with hard facial features that could at any moment become enraged or crack into a smile.
