Matthew does not develop a theology of justification, but he understands that the gracious offer of the kingdom requires an appropriate response. Therefore, although believers will be judged on the basis of their behavior, the grace of God has already been bestowed upon them by the inbreaking kingdom of God and by the death and resurrection of their Lord.
