Eilish's sister in canada is trying to help them escape with money and smugglers, but E still doesn't want to leave. It's a pretty bleak picture, with the military attacking the rebels seemingly without regard for collateral damage in the city.

Eilish got fired from her job, the car was vandalized, she told the kids she sold it, her friend is convinced their missing husbands have been killed. Oh, and she slapped her 12 yo son in the face when he got to ranting at her.

This book just gives you weighty feel of foreboding, the feeling that everything is going to come apart, probably at the worst possible moment.

Ch 3 finished. Protest attended, others arrested after Eilish left, son Mark unaccounted for until he shows up a day later, determined to keep going out (protesting?) with his birthday just days away when they will want him for the military. Grim.
