I'm much happier reading By Wireless - the second short novel included in this edition of The Murdered City - than I was reading The Murdered City itself. I care about what happens between Patrice, Antoine, and Claudia - not to mention some interesting supporting characters who will also be affected if things go horribly wrong. I also like not knowing if things will go horribly wrong - maybe a happy ending?

Okay. I’ve finished The Murdered City, and also the short story that comes after it, called ‘The Death of the Sun’. All that’s left for me in this book is another short novel that’s also included, and it’s called By Wireless. The Murdered City seemed more horrific to me than Radium Age Science Fiction - some really unsettling stuff. It will be interesting to see if By Wireless also feels like Horror over SF.

So this was another impulse buy, brought on by perusing the publisher’s catalogue. Panic in Paris was worth taking a chance, as was Captain Vampire - and of course the start of my Black Coat Press indulgence was getting certain Maurice Renard titles, plus Nyctalope on Mars, which were on a Radium Age SF recommended reading list. Then, daring picks like this. I get two short novels in this edition, SF from the 1920s.

Look up the word ‘neglected’ in this book, and there’s a picture of a dictionary. And as loony as that sounds…it looks like no one actually knows if it’s true. Look up the word ‘dictionary’ in this book…and there’s a picture of the Dick Shawn Aerie. Again, no one at Goodreads is in a position to dispute this. NEGLECTED, or what!?
