Compelling novel set in an alternative version of 1920s America, where Native Americans wield political power in the imaginary city of Cahokia on the Mississippi. The novel’s protagonist is Barrow, himself a Native American and now a detective with the Cahokia PD, investigating a gruesome, racially-tinged murder with his partner Drummond. Hats off to Spufford for this richly imagined work.
