Connection: The picture on the cover of the book is dominos and a hand that is about to push them down. In the book, Rudy's sisters were playing with dominos and Rudy's older brother said they looked like dead bodies. The hand represents the Nazis and Hitler. The dominos represent the people that died because of Hitler. The hand (Hitler) is knocking down (killing/destroying) the dominos (people/groups of people).

Summary: I finished the book. Alex Steiner comes home and finds out about the bombing and what happened to everyone. The funerals are held separately for each family. Liesel is adopted by the mayor and his wife (they previously provided books for Liesel). Max and Liesel are reunited after the war is over. Liesel has a family and dies of old age.

Summary: There was a bombing on Munich street. Rudy, his family, Mama, and Papa all died. Liesel was the only one left alive. The only reason that she lived was because, instead of sleeping, she was down in the basement writing. Liesel walks down Munich street and finds Rudy's body being carried away by the LSE. Mama and Papas bodies are lying in the rubble together and Liesel puts the accordion around Papa.

Favorite: "There would be punishment and pain, and there would be happiness, too. That was writing." (525)

Summary: Hans Hubermann is being sent back from war after he was in a car accident and broke his leg. Rudy's dad is still fighting in the war and Rudy is jealous that Liesel's dad came home before his dad did. There is a warning siren and the people that live on Liesel's and Rudy's street stay in a basement for two days. This time there was an actual attack.

Writer's Strategies- The author seems to know exactly what the reader is thinking as they read the book. When a major event happens that leaves you making inferences on what will happen next, the author writes what you think will happen. Then the author quickly shuts down your fictitious idea with the next event and it keeps you wanting to figure out what happens next.

Favorite: "The smoke bombs stood like matchsticks in the ground, filling the city's lungs." (463) I like this quote because it helps me picture the bombs sticking out of the ground, pushing smoke out into the air.

V-Visual Papa leaves for war a second time and Leisel thinks that everyone she loves is leaving her. This is a picture of Leisel hugging Papa before he goes on the train to leave for war. https://flowvella.com/s/31yx/Book-thi...

Writer's Purpose: The story teller (death) isn't an active character in the story. The author personified death and turned it into the narrator of the story. This gives the book a darker feeling and a unique twist. I also like how you had to figure out who the narrator was by reading the story, the author didn't just come right out and say who the narrator was.

Predict: Since Papa helped the marching Jewish man and got whipped for it, he will loose business and he won't be able to provide for his family. What he did will put shame on Liesel, Rosa, and himself. The town's people flipped over his paint cart and this will cause him to not have anything to do his job with and this will cause the family to loose money.
