I clearly didn’t read all of this at once. I started about a week ago, and this is my second attempt to read this. Now I’ve seen both movies, and I’m excited to see what happens next in the second book. But to do that, I have to read the first one all the way. And so far, I’m enjoying it much more than my first time!

While I get that Frank Herbert wanted us to know these characters, I wish we had this big moment without knowing that Yueh was the traitor. This interaction with him and Leto is really good, and I just wish we would’ve gotten to be surprised.

The first encounter with a sand worm is done incredibly well. High tension, anxiety, and yet we see how calm Leto can be under pressure. A long, but good chapter.

I love the Muad’Dib quote that starts this chapter. “There is probably no more terrible instant of enlightenment than the one in which you discover your father is a man— with human flesh.”
Duke Leto is such a strong yet vulnerable character.
