You know what? Even though we aren't prancing around an ostentatious mansion; there still is a puzzling abode in this mystery and cluelessness about the girl herself! No literary analysis is required. I can see plainly that I am swept along by this mystery just as well as Augusta's former one. I love that best friends is her theme. Mature, thinking girls; never shrieking ones either. Then, age doesn't matter.

One distasteful aspect I suppose has to be accounted for by the culture of 1917. These girls and the hostess' Dad are concerned the mysterious girl might be related to "a Mandarin". I've heard of the language but this is described as a particular type of Chinese person in Fukin province, one who would thorw a couple out for bearing a daughter. With the allowance of 98 years ago extended, this is a fantastic story.

I'm nearly as enchanted wit this book as "The Boarded-Up House", 1915, celebrating its centenary right now. You can't beat an empty mansion. This building appears to be a dirty apartment block, or it's how it comes across. However I am equally mystified and excited by this book's secret too! My sole clue, some kind of Chinese revolution, comes from a spoiler website. I should ask her to tone down her synopsis.

I don't think anything can be as enchantingly atmospheric as a furnished, empty, old house but this is another mystery of the kind that is exciting for me. My kind of mystery favours anything more creative than crimes. Thus Augusta Huiell Seaman's new characters (written 97 years ago!) wonder why a city building next to them is secretive.
