A little after she turns 15 years old a boy moves in next door, Oliver, who makes her want to go outside. She soon decides to go behind her mothers back and risk her life to see him in person.

The main character in Everything Everything is Madeline F. Whittier, she is 15 years old and has a severe combined immunodeficiency that makes it so she can't leave her house. Madeline is half African American and half Asian. She has a very studious personality and is very intelligent. Since she hasn't been outside since she was very young she is fairly introverted since she has no choice
