Another girl that rides the train is Megan. Just like Rachel, Megan is not satisfied with her life. She hated her job, so she quit and became a babysitter. But, then she realized she hates babysitting so she lied to the parents to quit her babysitting job. Megan is not happy with her life because her brother passed away only a few years back. Her and her brother had plans to travel, but now that he's gone they can't.

Rachel remembers her life back when she was married to Tom and she had her own house. While thinking about this she bumps her head on taxi cab, or so she says. She ends up in the emergency room with a junior Doctor giving her stitches on the cut on her head. The doctors do not think it is possible that she got this cut from the taxi.

The main setting of this book is the train Rachel takes every day. This train is very old and slow because it has been operating for a long time. Rachel rides this train in 2012, which is when the story takes place. The train is significant to Rachel because that is where she does lots of her thinking. She thinks about her past and sees her old house every day while on the train.

The main character of this story is Rachel and she is most likely in her mid-20s. She is a little chubby and looks lonely and beaten down. This story takes place two years after she moves out of her first house and five years after her and her lover, Tom, were together. She is upset because she went from being a beautiful and thin women with a loving man and her own house, to a lonely women living with a friend.
