i’ve struggled this month with finding the right book to fit this month’s theme of african american history. i tried the color purple, but i couldn’t get past the broken language after reading something as sophisticated as pride and prejudice. it’s not the book’s fault at all; i just don’t think it’s the right time for me to read it when i’m trying to find the joy in reading again. i tried reading black girl unlimited as it featured a “fantasy” element but it didn’t really fit the theme and i was really forcing myself to read it. maybe another time it’ll call back to me. after scrolling through kindle unlimited the other day, i find “my name is ona judge”. a historical fiction novel based on the true life of ona judge, a slave of THE george washington, i was intrigued when reading the overview. a past story and present story being intertwined through letters and similar themes to one another, i was hooked. i’ve read 5 long chapters in just 3 days which seems like nothing to most avid readers, but this is a big deal for me.

i’ve slacked in the 12 books a year challenge this month, but this book will hopefully get me back on track and fly through the next ones with such gripping interest. watch for updates soon. :)
