I hate to judge or minimize someone's pain, but really? That is what all this drama is about? I get that he needs to grieve, but people have dealt with much worse so grieve, get help and get on with life. Honor your parent's lives.

He heard just the faintest note of uncertainty in her voice and hated himself. Why was he doing this to her? He could either deal with the house— her house— or he couldn’t. Time to man up.

Derek has got to deal with his past baggage. He is being moody and acting like a jerk whenever "his home" comes up.....and yet we have not been given ANY reason for so much anxiety and the book is 3/4 of the way done.

You can tell this is a prequel with the info dumping on other characters and businesses in town.

She could just hear her mother now, “You’re dating a server in a pub?”“Actually, he’s a firefighter, Mom. And a server.”“What?! Haven’t I always told you never to marry a man who wears any kind of uniform? They’ll always break your heart.” Right, but marrying a status-obsessed workaholic would’ve been just fine.

She names the kitten Ashley and I guess I missed the joke. “Sorry, Ashley is spoken for.” “Ashley?” Chloe blinked at him. “She’s gray.”
