You know, to say those things nearly jeopardised his position at Carnegie, they seem almost mild...even if what he did the second time would have seen him yeeted into the sun even a couple years later.

Man, I was not kidding when I said it was going to be a busy one tonight. It was very worth it, though. Seeing just how much Kasparov capitulated in real time is one of those things that will go down in history as one of the most important moments in computing history.

For some reason, I expected this section to be shorter than it ended up. Still, it was quite insightful as to what happened in the initial contest between Deep Blue and Kasparov, as well as what would need to be done for the rematch. Tomorrow's gonna be...busy.

I had wondered when we'd get to the problem of the name of 'Deep Thought'. I didn't consider that a Catholic nun would be involved, though. Houston, we really do have a problem.

An interesting meeting...well, one with Kasparov, and another with Anatoly Karpov. The good thing with chess is that - if you know what to look for - you can learn what it is you need to do to improve. In this case, it's how to improve the machine's play. We'll see the fruits of that later, I'm sure.

Seeing the references to H2G2 is really nice. I even use 42 for a fair bit of my stuff...though it's a mighty weird coincidence that they played 42 matches with Deep Thought, and beat the 42nd-ranked player in the world. Weird, huh.

I had wondered, going into this, if it would go into how bitter a rivalry it was between ChipTest and Hitech. As it turned out...it wasn't as acrimonious as it is often portrayed. Not positive, exactly, but eh. Could be worse.

To say this is more of a 'quick and dirty' explainer on how ChipTest came to be, this is surprisingly thorough for background where it makes sense to be. Also, that die shot is just beautiful.
