I have learned from this book that the people of Holland use the train system in their day to day lifes. Many people use the train to go to work or to go to school.
After finding his great grandmas book, jacob finds out who the real father of his grandma is. She is on her death bed and he has to determine weather he should tell her or not.

During the war, many times women would get pregnant with the baby of a soldier when they werent married. Often times the baby would be taken away or someone from the family would take it either an aunt or a grandparent. What religion you were was often what determined what would happen to the baby. Geertrui has to have much courage throughout the book because after her lover dies she finds out that she is pregnant.

I have learned from the past culture of holland from the world war 2 era. During this time many people were living under the control of the Germans. After the british came to liberate, many familys would take in British soldiers and take care of them. During wars times, many farmers were the best off because they had the most food of anybody.

One thing I have learned so far from this book is that most the buildings are made from various types of stone or brick and they have been there for many years. Also people often meet and talk at local cafes to have lunch or to just have a drink. Also people in this culture often drink when they are younger.
