The motivating disaster has occurred - the gated community was breached, all the things burned and then scavenged, many residents killed, some after being raped first, even if they were only 8. Now there are 3 from the neighborhood heading north together. They don't know each other well, and trust is still low. Danger is everywhere, and they have to watch out for each other.

More darkness in this story, so dark. Her half-brother Keith went away to live outside the walls and seemed to be surviving out there. He'd come in occasionally and bring money he'd stolen. But it didn't take long for him to be tortured and murdered, with mom and step-dad having to ID the body. Gruesome descriptions of how he'd been mutilated.

Oh Keith, you went and lost a key to your community, trying to be a man. Surely this will lead to something bad, I bet.

We read a couple more chapters tonight. Narrator Lauren is seeing that their little walled-off community is likely to be breached at some point and she talks to her friend Joanne about this. Joanne gets freaked out by it, tells her mom who tells her dad who talks to Lauren's dad who sits her down for a chat.
