The main character's appearance isn't exactly described in detail. All we really know is she's white and has brown hair and brown eyes and isn't very tall. Her name is Maggie and turned 16 recently- in the beginning of the book. She was originally from Chicago but moved to Dublin since her mom got married to a man from there. Maggie is carefree and is willing to do anything her heart sets out.

The recent setting in the book is Rome, Italy. The story takes place in 1996 and everything there is described beautifully- to the grafitti on the walls by the train to the ancient buildings. This setting is important because they travelled all the way from Dublin to fulfill Maggie's uncle's last wish of attending a concert there.
