I'm gonna try to be as vague as possible for spoilers but SJM literally wrote in a surprise tragic back story for a character so the reader can sympathize with them, and then had that character say basically " so glad you can sympathize with me now that you know my tragic back story" to another character and I don't think she did that as a meta jab.
