TIL Antarctica was a rainforest with penguins the size of rugby players. Wild.

“The very foundations on which Appalachia, Ireland, Scotland and Scandinavia are built are part of the same geological event, the same deep-time range. That they are raised places today is a distant echo of their shared, highland past.”

Wondering what it would be like to read this in reverse. Would maybe provide a timeline to help structure the journey in the absence of storytelling and plot? Still very interesting and beautifully written!

Interesting and quite intense to read. Halliday transports you to previous versions of the world as promised, sometimes at the cost of your brain hurting. Likely to be some of the most descriptive writing I’ve ever read - although it does work in this context.
