As I laid up in bed at 3am, reading Proust's description of the relation between sleep and memory, the words acted on me like a spell. Before my waking eyes I saw all the moments when I woke up in a strange place or moments when I woke to the unfamiliar pleasure of finding a sleeping lover next to me. It was as if the words took me into a divine forbidden realm, previously inaccessible to me.
