Martin's set up in this chapter beautifully introduces the true threat to the 7 Kingdoms - & it's salvation. Jon's reflection on Old Nan's story serves as powerful foreshadowing. Mormont's raven is also an interesting feature. It repeats the word "corn" more than any phrase: crows feasting in a corn field was the last image Bran saw before he was paralyzed - we return to Bran's POV in the next chapter.

So interesting how Sansa views her peers as childish and naive. She is so naive to the insidious intentions of Cersei and the council, wrapped up in a fantasy of marriage to Joffrey and a life as "Queen". It was Jeyne that was more in touch with the reality of what was happening as the Lannisters seized power after Robert's death, and the grim fate of her own father and the Stark allies.

King Robert is dead and now the showdown for the Iron Throne has kicked into full gear. The Lannisters wasted no time in laying claim to the succession and it's clear they have no intention of entertaining Robert's last wishes. The bloodshed has already started, and I have a feeling poor Ned is never going to see Winterfell again. In the Game of Thrones, you win or you die. Let the games begin...

Here is where the truth comes out about Jaime and Cersei. We may have put 2 & 2 together, but now we've moved past speculation with Cersei verbally confirming it herself. We know we can take her at her word b.c. Ned has made it a point for them to meet in the Godswood, suggesting they are having a "heart to heart".

We get a glimpse into Sansa in this chapter. We see her innocence and naivete, along with her obsession for beauty and disdain for what she considers "ugly". She is in the jaws of the political dark side of Kings Landing and she is ignorant to it. She looks at her situation like she is in a fairy tale. A huge barrier exists between her and the political intrigue she is living in.
