i was really intimidated when a friend (who expects to discuss it) gave me this Nobel-prize winning 800-page-doorstop of a book, all written in stream of consciousness as one long sentence. But it's turning out not to be a hard read at all. It sort of just loops along, carrying you through the narrator's interesting (yes, repetitive but aren't we all?) mental exploration of what matters in life. Glad I started

Finished Day 2 (of the 7 in the Septology) I keep being pulled along in this enormously long sentence; in among bacon and onions and bread is how he tells whether a painting is really good (i.e. has a shining darkness in it) and how the shining gets into everything and what it has to do with God. And memories of his dead wife. And the Latin with which he puts himself to sleep. Surprised that I keep enjoying it.
