Winston is visiting a antique store outside of the party that holds things that were before the revolution. While he is observing the items inside, a party member walks by the building. This terrifies him because he thinks she's spying on him. He contemplates beating her with a stone but ends up dating her later on in the book. She was following him, not to report him, it was because she loved him. Plot twist.
