Guess what? Unless a book is illustrated, I have no way of knowing what a character looks like unless he's described. In the book. By the author. So if a character is black and suddenly race is an issue in the story? YOU NEED TO HAVE TOLD ME THAT THE CHARACTER IS BLACK. omg. Good grief. Please do not make race an issue in your novel if you're uncomfortable presenting physical describes of people of color.
