Pages 210-212 contain the crux, the core, the axis on which the entire book revolves. Ms. Haupt’s philosophy glows under the epiphany she has about her pet starling’s true gift to her.

Immensely satisfying to read each paragraph. An easy causal read but truly lyrical in its expression and structure. There’s science here but ultimately it is an ecological treatise on the kinship we share with all living things.

Now we’re awash in Mozart’s eschatology!

So much to cull from this delightful book. Ruminations on Mozart, on linguistics, on bird behavior, the shaping of time by music, even on the quality of listening. All of it revolving around sweet Carmen, the author’s pet starling. I am entranced.
