Rebecca I loved this book with its shoutout to John Prine. Listen to Paradise by John Prine a few times to make your reading experience more enjoyable. Be sure to read the lyrics. If you have seen the coal mines, both surface and underground, you can see all that easily in your mind. I am old enough to have seen land ravaged by Peabody Coal and also, the world's largest shovel. Alix E. Harrow was able to write delightfully eccentric characters that were not just over the top stereotypical Southerners that trigger my annoyance and gag reflex. I usually hate Southern Gothic Horror for that reason. Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver is another book set in the South that hits really hard and true. It has many red flag and trigger warnings for folks who live in Appalachia, but try it if you think that you can handle it. It took me a month to read Demon Copperhead because of all the triggers.
