Do yourself a favor and avoid the edition with pullman’s commentary. Even if you are not a christian its best to avoid pullman’s thoughts that handicap his interpretation with his anti-christian sentiments. Whether you like it or not Paradise lost was written from a mind profoundly steeped in christian ideas. To attempt to make milton into some kind of satan cheerleader is hilariously misguided.
