'Nay!' said Legolas. 'Alas for us all! And for all that walk the world in these after-days. For such is the way of it: to find and lose, as it seems to those whose boat is on the running stream.
Also I've noticed my copy has 460 something pages rather than the 432 predicted here. Love that

Gandalf vs. the Balrog hits sooooo hard. The result is old hat at this point but I still felt my jaw drop.

I live for grumpy Gandalf threatening to dash Pippin's skull against the rocks. The man needs to smoke. Let him smoke!!! Everything from the Fellowship coming together to setting out to being midway through Moria has all been 10/10 adventure type vibes. When I read through this I admire how the movies streamlined this plot, but damn if the unadapted between-sections (the camping and trekking) aren't the best parts.

I was reading a negative review of this book earlier where someone was making fun of Frodo saying a poem in the middle of the council of Elrond and how pointlessly silly it was, and I mean first off, it's Bilbo who says it, and the poem is a direct response to Boromir's doubt, but most of all verse and poetry have been given a sacred and prophetic treatment throughout already so it works perfectly as a response!!!

one wonder about these books is they make fantastic the little things like the steam rising from a pot of boiling herbs or the connection of raindrops coming from the sea. yes there's elves and barrow-wights and magical forest grandpas, but there's also so much "magic" presented that is something the reader could actually experience. and again: the songs and poems freakin rock, and I love Sam's freestyled verse.
