Skimming over the detailed bureaucratic histories of various govt agencies, I'm still enjoying this book/study, although it is reading work.

While Pyne does a good, engaging job of fulfilling "cultural" aspects of US fire history in early chapters, much of the middle is more coverage of bureaucracy culture, which is much drier. Still nuggets of interesting facts, but a forced-march read right now.
