Not sure how I feel about this. There was one completely incomprehensible sentence, and a lot of it feels kind of like old-school middle grade, but it could be that it's kicking off a whole series, and sometimes that does make for an awkward beginning. I do like these characters, and the end of chapter four had a nice hook.
