“She’ll be the one killing you,” Breca screamed at Drekr. His eyes were
flickering amber and green and he sniffed the air. “I can smell your fear
from here,” he laughed.

“It’s a hard world, friends make it better,” Grok squawked. “You helped me, we helped you.” He ran a beak through black feathers on a wing, “Favour for a favour. Everyone happy."

He stood on his dead prey, looked up to the slate-grey skies above and howled.

“What’s the joke?” Sighvat asked as he lumbered up.
Grend stood straighter and wiped tears of laughter from his eyes. “Elvar
is growing up,” he said.

“I know,” Varg said. “I am sorry.”
“Don’t be sorry; be better.” She gave him a hard look

“Are you Guðvarr?” the man asked him.
How do you know that? As if I would tell you, you snivelling oaf.
The man’s eyes bored into him with a fierce intensity.
“Yes,” he rasped.
The man nodded to himself.
“A friend asked me not to kill you. But he sent you a message. To say that Lif is coming for you.”

Will I ever get used to this?

“It is normal before a fight, brother,” he said.

Brother. How have I had such good fortune to find these people, after so many years of loneliness and pain?
