Spoiler warning for the few brave souls planning to read this book.
I’m gutted that Willem died (my face is currently covered in tears), but I’m grateful that he only left Jude in death. I was worried he was going to leave him for some other seemingly trivial reason, but he kept his word and never let Jude go. He truly loved Jude and everything he was until the day he died.

This is also the first time Jude is hurt over something GOOD. All the other pain in his life has been caused by severe trauma, but this pain was from the loss of someone who brought him joy and happiness and a sense of belonging. They had unconditional love for each other and lived through The Happy Years together. This sadness gives him something beautiful to miss, rather than a trauma to fear.
