If the first meeting in the firelight of Rockelstadt Castle early in 1921 had cast a spell on them, this second encounter did nothing to break it. Carin von Kantzow was never one to disobey the dictates of her heart, and not the type to have a clandestine affair. It is typical of her romantic nature that she was quickly comparing herself and Goering with the stricken lovers of her favourite opera Tristan and Isolde.
