This is a sweet book that reads like a long poem but is as rich in detail and story as any novel. A memoir of Jacqueline Woodson's childhood it expresses, though in short and child-memory brush strokes the history of the Civil Rights Movement of the 60's. Jacquie captures her little girl self becoming more and more aware but wanting to be a writer from the moment she could communicate.
