I’ve always loved Saramago’s novels They’re wry, at times, comic in an off-hand way, they’re curiously emotionally distant, and philosophically concerned with the larger satellite view of humanity. That’s what draws me to him. Never goes for the cheap tears, but the sadness the reader is left with is always profound. Like a long constant drip into a well, it haunts the conscience with its truths.
