(1) Orion: "Jason Grace scorned you. Percy Jackson refused you. Haven't you been... what’s the word... dumped enough?"
Reyna: "I don’t define myself by the boys who may or may not like me."
- The words "boys" and "like" startled me a bit. With all the military talk (legions, weapons, etc.), it's easy to forget these are teenagers dealing with boy-girl issues.
- Another reason why Greeks fit the concept better.

Jayson is finished
Notes:
(1) With this finished, I can finally move on to reading "The Trials of Apollo," which is the reason I started this re-read to begin with.
- It won't be immediately, though. For one thing, I need to find my box set, which is somewhere buried under my pile of books.
(2) "Granddad, the kids said, you are full of schist."
- I like the schist jokes not as much as the dam jokes, but much more than the muskeg jokes.

(1) "'Way ahead of you, Aquaman,' Leo said.
'Okay, do not call me Aquaman. That’s even worse than water boy.'"
- Obviously, before Jason Mamoa made Aquaman a heartthrob.
(2) Piper: 'But... Annabeth is wiser. Hazel can move faster on Arion. Frank can turn into animals —'
Annabeth: 'But you’ve got heart.'
- Yes, heart. Just like the Brazilian kid from "Captain Planet."

Jayson is 34% done
Notes:
(1) The chapter POVs are interesting. Just looking at the table of contents, the only characters with POV chapters are Jason, Piper, Leo, Reyna and Nico. So, that's the original three from the first book, plus two heretofore non-regulars.
- Last book, each of the seven main characters had POV chapters.
(2) Nico's chapters are interesting; he talks about Percy a lot.
- Sort of like Annabeth in "Mark of Athena."

Notes:
(1) Piper: "[Leo]'ll be watching from the ship. Go to the ridge —"
Annabeth: "'And flash him!... That came out wrong."
- Out of context, this series can get quite suggestive.
(2) 'Whoa, Sparky. We need to contact the Argo II, get help.'
'You haven’t called me Sparky in a long time.'
Piper kissed [Jason's] forehead. 'Stick with me and I’ll insult you all you want.'"
- Has she ever called him Sparky? News to me.

Alexandra Elend Wolf Yeah, I felt that making Reyna in love, or crushing, on both boys was not the best move for what Rick wanted her character to be. Better, I feel, would have been to leave her love free and to find those things later on in life. Plus, we had enough love issues with the rest of the characters, we could have spared her of those .

Yeah, I agree. I think she works better as someone unattached emotionally. That sort of vulnerability sort of diminishes her authority as a military and political leader. Since Camp Jupiter doesn't have a Mr. D or a Chiron, she sort of fills that role.

Though, I do understand, since everyone else has some sort of relationship drama, the absence of hers would be conspicuous. It does make her more interesting as a character, though a lot of things could have made her more interesting.

What I do like about it is that it really underscores how young she is, which is something easy to forget with this series. I had assumed she was older, at least in her later teens. Personally, I'm not too troubled by it on balance.

Oh, I'm not too bothered by it, either xD I mean, it's not badly handled or anything that would make it frightful or something, but I do always find myself wishing that she would be spared the romantic drama, as it just doesn't go well with the way I perceive her.

I think that keeping her personal drama strictly about her sister would have been interesting and more in-tuned with the rest of her presence and vibe, that's all *shrugs*

That being said, I do love the take that it makes her feel her years and it's a good way to remember that she is nothing but a young girl thrust into too-complicated situations that she shouldn't have to face *nods eagerly*

Agreed. Hopefully, she gets featured more in upcoming books. I'd like to see her more fleshed out as a character and all these other aspects explored in due course.

A short story centered around her could be a lot of fun, I agree. We'll see what we get, though :D

Yeah, they really need another short story collection. The companion books for The Trials of Apollo were more or less reference guides.

Considering that the Will and Nico book is coming out soon, after Riordan had said that he was done with this world, I think we can safely hope that there will be more companion books XD

Actually, the Will and Nico book (The Sun and the Star) is already out. I have it here in front of me. I plan to read it shortly after finishing The Trials of Apollo. I also hear that there's another Percy book upcoming, where he's in college with Annabeth.

Oh, that's right! I forgot it was already out, I need to get to that one soon XD Thanks for reminding me!

Yes, The Chalice of the Gods, as I believe it's called, is supposed to come out later this year. I can't wait to see more of Percy and Annabeth, as protagonists.

Jayson Alexandra Elend Wolf wrote: "Oh, that's right! I forgot it was already out, I need to get to that one soon XD Thanks for reminding me!"

My pleasure, hope you enjoy it when you get to it :)

I'm sort of torn about this. On one hand, I always like to wait for the box set to come out so I can get the books cheaper and binge them instead of waiting. On the other hand, I've never really been caught up with all the Riordan books before, and I just might be by then.

Lol, I totally get the struggle XD I, too, wait for box sets because of the same reasons but, no, I will not be able to wait to know what happens next in Percy and Annabeth's journies. Plus, the internet is sure to implode with it, and avoiding spoilers will be a task that I'll rather avoid.

That's true, especially around here, and especially now that I'm up to date, I'm bound to spoiled; whereas before I wouldn't be paying attention and spoilers would have gone in one ear and out the other. In all likelihood, I won't read it day of release, but I won't hold off too long either.

Precisely, once you know the story well enough it's impossible to ignore spoilers :')

Jayson Alexandra Elend Wolf wrote: "Precisely, once you know the story well enough it's impossible to ignore spoilers :')"

And I'm sure with the TV series upcoming, people will feel extra-motivated to read it right away. The frenzy will be in the air.

Oh, yes, you can already feel it building up in the air *lol*

Jayson Alexandra Elend Wolf wrote: "Oh, yes, you can already feel it building up in the air *lol*"

I'm sure once it airs you'll see a lot of first-timers starting the original series, in addition to people doing re-reads and starting the new book. No better place to gauge that particular enthusiasm than here :)

Yes, indeed. Actually, I've already seen people either picking the series for the first time recently because of the upcoming show or doing rereads so... yeah XD

It's wonderful to see that the show can breath new life into the series, even though I don't think this particular fandom was anywhere close to dead.

Jayson Alexandra Elend Wolf wrote: "Yes, indeed. Actually, I've already seen people either picking the series for the first time recently because of the upcoming show or doing rereads so... yeah XD"

Yeah, I've seen that too. Riordan books will always be on your GR timeline, but it's so much more now.

Alexandra Elend Wolf wrote: "It's wonderful to see that the show can breath new life into the series, even though I don't think this particular fandom was anywhere close to dead."

My view is that anything that's popular is going to be reflected in merchandising. When Game of Thrones was popular, it wasn't just the books that felt a resurgence, but also all sorts of other things as well. With Percy Jackson books are always going to be at the forefront. Depending on how popular it might become, I could see orange camp shirts and cabin insignias on all sorts of things.

I agree that the fandom's not close to dead, but right now the material manifestation of fandom is limited to the books, whereas the bigger it gets, the more you'll see it spread into other avenues.

I mean, I already see orange t-shirts and other merchandise for this series but, yeah, is all in a smaller scale than what will see soon.

Whether the adaptation is bad or good, I'll be grateful for exposing more people to this fun series :D

Jayson Alexandra Elend Wolf wrote: "I mean, I already see orange t-shirts and other merchandise for this series but, yeah, is all in a smaller scale than what will see soon."

I expect a merchandizing blitz to accompany the imminent advertising campaign. It's more a kid's property after all, and anything that appeals to kids is going to be capitalized on with tie-in products.

Alexandra Elend Wolf wrote: "Whether the adaptation is bad or good, I'll be grateful for exposing more people to this fun series :D"

Yeah, certainly the movies are the first time I ever heard of it. I didn't know it was a book series until later.

I think I first came to know about this series through fanart, which is already undergoing a resurrection, even though it really never went away. So, yeah, I think we can agree that we're about to see a lot more Percy Jackson soon xD

Yes, and hopefully for a while if the series is successful :)
