One example of figurative language in this book is when the "Storyman" was chasing a little girl, "Then the Storyman was upon her, his cloak swirling around him like the wings of some evil night creature." This simile shows an example of how frighting the Storyman is to the child he is chasing. To her he appears to be some sort of monster who is chasing her, so that's how she describes him.

Maddie is brave, she has the courage to defend herself. for example when a man threatens her and runs away "For at least 20 seconds, she lay motionless, paralyzed by fear. Then, slowly, fear began to be replaced by anger. She wasn't a helpless child...She was an apprentice Ranger!" This is how Maddie has become confident in her abilities and is not afraid of a threat. This makes her into a courageous fighter.

Maddie has gone from being spoiled to being kind and helping. For example when she kills a Marten that had been terrorizing a poor farmer. "She rose and walked back to where they were waiting for her, the pelt hanging from on hand...'Here,Mistress Aggie. You can make this into a fine neck warmer or hat for the winter.'"
This show that Maddie has adjusted to helping people, she gives away her reward to the farmers.

Maddie is spoiled. She has grown up all of her life with servants and thinks she is better than everyone else. for example when someone calls her Maddie. "'Um... I'm not sure that it's proper for you to call me Maddie,'she said apologetically. 'Really you should call me 'Princess' or 'Your Highness'" This shows that she does not know how to treat people as equals and it is something that she overcomes in the book.
