Restarting this now I’m on holiday, and it is going much better than the first time.

The sci fi and alternate universe elements are meted out barely, but tantalisingly enough to keep one reading.

The value of the book is noticed in the conversations and the internal monologues of the characters. Even now it will require a reread.
