Phew. It's heavy, but not crushing. I'm relieved.

I'm hoping I'll find a few tales like ones my grandmothers have told me about the pride stitched into each new flour sack dress or the joy of taking turns chewing a single stick of chewing gum (a rare and treasured treat). I'll give it a few chapters and hope for the best, but I admit I'm not feeling hopeful at all.

I've only read the prologue, and I'm already second guessing my decision to pick this one up. Already it feels almost suffocating. I already feel as though this won't be a book about celebrating the mere act of both surviving and finding glints of happiness while growing up in poverty, which is pretty much what defines the south to me.
