Jayson’s Reviews > The Magic Order, Vol. 1 > Status Update

Jayson
Jayson is on page 33 of 169

Notes:
(1) Already, and by a good margin, this is the darkest Mark Millar I've read.
- Granted, of his whole oeuvre, I've only read "Kick-Ass," "Reborn" and "The Ambassadors."
(2) Coipel's art really does add an extra layer of soot, making everything that bit more grimy.
(3) Millar's always been known for vulgarity and gore, but never sex and nudity, so that's new (for me).

Jayson’s Previous Updates

Jayson
Jayson is on page 160 of 169

Notes:
(1) My immediate thought after the issue #5 reveal was that I was totally wrong about this being like "The Godfather." But then I thought, there's a "Sonny," a "Fredo" and a "Michael," so it still kind of is.
- I just mismatched the characters.
(2) Nice "Watchmen" paraphrase/homage.
- Millar's quotes "Batman: Year One" in "Kick-Ass," so I expect it's a thing he does.

Notes:
(1) I've got to believe mob movies were a major influence.
- Broadly speaking, this is essentially the plot of "The Godfather."
(2) I wonder what the time travel rules are here. You'd think that it could be easily abused without restrictions.
(3) The evil wizards all wear masks... except the East Asian girl.
- But she never moves a muscle. So for all I know she does.

Notes:
(1) Issue #2 reminds me of that last season of "The Sopranos" where Tony's associates get whacked one by one.
- The difference here is it's only issue #2, and we don't know anyone yet. Deaths are essentially their introduction.
(2) Cordelia has this sort of Wednesday Addams thing, where she's dark and morose to kids.
(3) The "Kick-Ass" t-shirt is a decent Easter Egg.

Notes:
(1) Been meaning to read this for a while, and with an upcoming Netflix adaptation, I figure I may as well get ahead of the curve.
- You never know if things will reach "Game of Thrones" popularity, with spoilers everywhere you turn.
(2) I hear a lot about Olivier Coipel, but I've only seen one issue of his. I didn't really get the hype, but perhaps I will with this.
