A good description of the open markets in a city in Trinidad you will find stalls of vegetables, fabric, and jewelry. Most of the dialogue is written in the Trinidad dialect spoken by a significant part of the population and the focus is on an East Indian family and its cultural activities, prayers, multi gods, etc.

A great little read that takes you to the Trinidad culture but also about relationships within the family unit and how they relate to others out of the family. Their quarrels and interaction from generation to generation can be similar to any culture.

I was asked to read this book so I'm going for it. I have read Naipaul's books. He is a Trinidadian author.
