The end in this story is when he was hunting and he found a hunter and his family living on a island by the frozen lake. They have a supply plane that comes every few weeks. Brian enjoyed living with the Smallhorns while he waited for the plane and when the plane came, Brian didn't want to leave. But in the end, Brian was rescued.

Brian just survived an attack with a moose. The moose gave him a lot of meet and also helped make a vest. Although, getting it back to his camp was very hard, considering how big the animal was. Then in the middle of the night, he heard what he thought as gun shoots but really was the trees popping because of the cold. The sap in the tree expands.

A summary of the book so far is that Brian is noticing that fall is coming. Also a bear came and started rummaging through his pot because it smelt food. He kicked the bear and the bear attacked him. He realizes that he needs better protection.
