I had forgotten how great Nancy's dad is and how supportive he is of his daughter being completely daring. He just warned her about how dangerous her sleuthing could get, and when she says she isn't afraid, he actually says, "Good! I was hoping you would say that. I'm glad you have the courage of your convictions." I'm starting to remember why I loved these books so much.

OK so he doesn't *insist* but the scenario is just as problematic: "By this time she and the trooper had reached her car. 'Would you like me to drive?' he asked. 'Why—er—yes, if you wish,' Nancy replied." So he just is like, hey little lady, need me to handle this? Positive takeaway: the author saw fit to make Nancy basically be like, "WTF? I guess... Not like I can say no, man with a gun."

:( There is a random policeman who helps Nancy and says, "Not many girls would have used their wits the way you did." I wondered if I was overreacting to the 1930s sexism there, but then on the very next page he pressures Nancy to give him a ride back to the station...and when they get to her car, he--a total stranger Nancy does not know--insists on driving her car! What?!?! This guy. Not cool.
