I have to say, this isn't the adventure I expected. Creative and layered, yes but far too cruel for children. It isn't nasty in one part or two; my disapproval is because the whole sequence is harsh from the beginning. Also, a 'dive right in' style works in familiar settings. In fantasy, we need to know what the world is that we're in and adjust to its parameters, before racing. I would have enjoyed that more.
