This isn't as good as I initially thought. It's been a while since I've complained about this, but the pacing is really slow - I'm not even sure if there is a plot.

The climax isn't as compelling as it could've been, mostly because the first 200 pages of the book didn't build up to it very well. I don't know for sure how it's going to end, but let's just say I won't be surprised if Nikki finds a way out of going back to the Tunnels.

That was a mildly good twist - I did predict that there would be a twist involving Mary, but I admittedly didn't know what it would be.

We're just now getting a good idea of the world, which is a little frustrating. I'm glad Ashton didn't just dump it on us right at the beginning, but until now, what we got seemed confusing and contradictory.

It's so nice to see a creepy guy treated as actually creepy. There's not very much of that in paranormal romance.

This is surprisingly not bad. Nikki doesn't have much narrative presence, but the story is actually pretty unusual and interesting, and the writing isn't bad. Huh. I expected this to be a shitty paranormal romance. Never judge a book by its cover, I guess.
Also, every time Nikki mentions the 'Feed', I think of M.T. Anderson's Feed, which is quite confusing.

This starts off pretty differently than your typical paranormal romance would, I must say. I'm maybe not going into this with a particularly open mind, but it's not bad so far.

Persephone is a really popular myth to retell in YA, probably because there's an obvious potential for star-crossed lovers involved. I've never read such an adaption until now, but I've always thought: how can there possibly be enough to the story to warrant a whole book, let alone a whole trilogy? It wasn't exactly a complicated myth.
